Matter

A new smart home standard

Matter is a promising technology in the smart home sector. Similar to KNX, Matter is an open and universal communication standard that was developed to improve interoperability between different smart home devices. This means that in future you will not only be able to control your Busch-free@home® system, but also your entire smart home via the Busch-free@home® Next app or via the platform of your choice.

What is Matter?

Similar to the KNX standard, Matter offers the option of networking different devices regardless of the manufacturer. This means that you are not tied to one manufacturer and different apps in your smart home, but can, for example, network your lighting and refrigerator with each other across manufacturers. And the best thing about it: in future you can control everything with the Busch-free@home® Next app.

Matter is not a new wireless network technology, but a series of standardized command chains that are sent via local IP networks. Matter uses WLAN, Ethernet or Thread for this purpose. Matter also supports bridges in order to build a technical bridge to wireless standards and devices that do not themselves support Matter.

The technology is also supported by Apple, Google, Amazon and others, offering numerous new ways to network your own home.

Matter technology thus promises a future in which various smart home components work together seamlessly to make your life in the smart home easier and more efficient.

Matter, KNX and Zigbee - what's the difference?

Matter describes a series of standardised command chains that are sent via local IP networks. The KNX standard, on the other hand, is an intelligent bus system for electrical installations.
Unlike Zigbee, Matter is a standardising standard and not a separate network protocol. Matter does not require any proprietary bridge(s) to network devices with each other.

Matter in detail

Matter uses the Internet Protocol (IP) as the basis for communication between the various smart home devices. Here you will find a simplified explanation of how Matter works technically:

  • Matter-enabled devices communicate via IP addresses. Each device has a unique IP address with which it can be identified.

  • Thread was specially developed to improve the networking of smart home devices. Among other things, Matter uses the Thread network protocol to ensure that devices in a network can communicate with each other wirelessly and reliably. In addition to Thread, Matter also supports WLAN and Ethernet. The difference is that Thread connects the devices via a self-reinforcing mesh network based on the IPv6 internet protocol.

  • Matter ensures the security of communication between devices by implementing advanced security protocols, such as data encryption. This protects both the privacy of users and the integrity of the transmitted data.

  • To ensure seamless compatibility between Matter-enabled devices, they must fulfil certain specifications and undergo certification. This certification ensures that the devices can communicate with each other properly, regardless of their manufacturer.

What components are there within a Matter network?

The various components and functions within a Matter network are "Bridge", "Controller" and "Thread Border Router". These are often combined in one device, such as the Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo or the Samsung Smart Things Hub.

  • Matter Bridge

The Matter standard currently provides for three network technologies for connecting devices:Ethernet, WLAN and Thread. Matter supports so-called bridges in order to build a technical bridge to wireless standards and devices that do not support Matter themselves.

  • Matter Controller

A Matter Controller helps with the installation and control of devices within the network. As the central instance, it assumes the tasks of local and secure control of connected Matter devices.

  • Thread Border Router

A Thread Border Router connects the Thread network to other IP-carrying interfaces such as WLAN or Ethernet. This allows all Matter devices to communicate with each other, regardless of which IP-based network they are on.

What are the benefits of Matter?

  • As an open communication standard, Matter enables manufacturer-independent communication between the various devices.

  • As an open communication standard, manufacturers of smart home solutions can develop their products to support the Matter standard. This means that Matter is open to everyone and the product portfolio of devices that support Matter is constantly growing.

  • Matter is designed to work completely locally and without the cloud. This means that the manufacturers do not access, store or process your personal data.
You can find out what privacy and security looks like with the numerous manufacturers from the various companies.

Busch-free@home® and Matter

To establish the connection between the Busch-free@home® system and Matter, you will need to install a so-called add-on in the future. This requires at least the use of a System Access Point 2.0. As we are currently going through the certification process, we are not yet able to provide you with the official add-on.

What is an addon?
Add-ons are software extensions that can be installed on the respective System Access Point on a customer-specific basis. These can be developed and made available by Busch-Jaeger or by external developers and partners with the help of the Addon Development Kit (ADK).
